Peugeot 5008 Buyer's guide review

Overview

French vehicles are renowned for their innovative design and engineering. Among them, Peugeot stands out as a pioneering brand since 1889 when it introduced its first three-wheel. Today, Peugeot is a part of the French automotive glow-up. They excel in the European market with a diverse lineup of SUVs known for their stylish aesthetics, advanced technology, and performance. The company introduced the Peugeot 5008 as a multi-purpose vehicle in 2009. It is perfect for daily urban driving, combining practicality with its design. While the early models were not particularly beautiful, the line saw a glow-up with a major facelift in later years. The Peugeot 3008 is the shorter version of the 5008. Today, we delve into the second generation, launched in 2017, transitioning from a traditional MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) to a sleek SUV (sports utility vehicle) without decreasing the size.

Engine and Performance

Both the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 models have a range of four engine options: a 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol, a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol, a 1.5-liter diesel, and a 2-liter diesel. Each engine variant can be paired with either a smooth 6-speed manual or an efficient 8-speed automatic transmission. The 1.2-liter turbocharged petrol 3-cylinder setup with the 8-speed automatic transmission engine generates 128 horsepower and a maximum torque of 230 Nm. The engine takes the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 197 km/h. Despite being a luxurious French SUV, the Peugeot 5008 second generation has two jacks to keep the trunk open instead of a hydraulic system.

Exterior Design

The typical Peugeot grill adds a unique design where the first half functions as a fake vent while the latter half serves as a real vent. Additional small real grills are also integrated to enhance cooling efficiency. The headlights have a distinctive grill with a small part in the middle, indicating the tooth of the lion from their logo. It showcases Peugeot's design language that extends across their car and SUV range. Being an SUV, there are fog lights. Although they are standard today, were considered advanced features back in 2017-2019. The overall exterior design is modern and stylish.

From the side view, the vehicle has a sleek sporty design with a blacked-out dent. The blend of glass with black components and a chrome accent line enhance its appearance. The stainless steel rims, chosen over the usual aluminum ones, contribute to the vehicle's solid feel. At the rear, there is a unique element; three square brake lights symbolizing a lion's scratch. There are two diffusers and a fake exhaust along with the real one to enhance its sporty aesthetic. Although the vehicle has been manufactured in 2017, its modern design concept still looks contemporary.

The Peugeot 5008 has a convenient hands-free boot opening mechanism, activated by a simple leg motion. When it does not work there is a button for effortless door opening and closing. Being a 7-seater vehicle, it gives flexibility in boot space, expanding up to 1250 liters when the last two seats are folded down. With all seats in place, there is a space of about 701 liters. A programmable feature allows you to set the headspace for the rear door according to the garage's dimensions. There are only two tethering points with a helpful light for loading or unloading in the dark. The under-boot space is somewhat limited when the seats are folded. However, it may not be the most luxurious 7-seater setup. But it remains comfortable for most needs.

Interior Design and Comfort

The Peugeot 5008 not only has an attractive design but also gives a sense of luxury. From the moment of approaching, the doors are solid. The soft-close mechanism adds high-quality craftsmanship. The interior is a perfect blend of several materials: fabric, leather-like finishes, and solid plastics. They create a comfortable and stylish environment. There is a sporty squared sharp steering wheel with convenient volume control, voice control, and call answering options. Unlike many Japanese vehicles, European models like the 5008 offer voice control functionality with an English setup. The typical European layout could be seen in pedal shifters. The signal light and headlight controls are on the left side of the steering wheel, while the wiper controls are on the right side. There is a switch for the cruise control at a hidden area on the steering wheel. The gear shifter on the center adds a sporty vibe with typical automatic gear controls. There is a small screen on that. Below the gear, there is an electric hand brake option. There is the sport mode in Peugeot 5008, which adjusts the suspension system and gear setup for an enhanced driving experience.
The SUV has fully designed cup holders with solid pins, ensuring the beverages stay secure. The infotainment system has minimalistic toggles, like airplane switches, to offer controls for volume and power. A dedicated folder for business cards has been added to the car's practical luxury. There is a wireless charging pad for a mobile. Centrally there is a split cabin design common in modern luxury vehicles. As a French luxury vehicle, both the driver and passenger have mirrors with accompanying lights. The SOS emergency call function is available for peace of mind. A separate, elegantly simple digital display indicates passenger seating positions, combining modern technology with an analog feel. The vehicle doesn't have a sunglass holder.
The Peugeot 5008 has a sunroof that can be opened to enjoy the feeling. The sunroof is positioned at the front to enjoy fresh air and natural light while driving, offering an alternative to using the AC. There is a cabin space with a large fuse box inside it to change the option of switching the driver's seat side. Although it is an international vehicle, the design choice remains unchanged. It has been impacted to the cabin's spaciousness. The door bins have space separators for both the driver and the passenger. The GT line variant has high-end power seats and includes a massage seat option for both front seats. But the driver's seat of the second generation offers standard comfort with lumbar support and power adjustment options. The passenger seat doesn't have power adjustments. It has a manual lever for control.

The rear seats offer a decreased level of comfort compared to the front with the same style. A storage net and a foldable tray are located on the back of the front seats. The dual climate control system and the vents are in the center. There are no vents on the ceiling or at the back. Rear passengers have the benefit of a sunshade for the windows, protecting them from the sun. But the front passengers do not have. While the headrests are comfortable, the headspace might feel a bit cramped. The baby seat latches are hidden. But it allows a child seat to be securely installed on any of the three rear seats. There is a headrest available for the middle passenger. Although the middle seat is not occupied, an armrest is not available.

The second-row seats in the luxury seven-seater SUV can be manually folded for easy access to the third row. It allows it to be folded either all together or separately. The seven-seater setup is designed with elegance, giving an amazing experience for all passengers. The third-row seats provide a lack of space. There is a 12v socket for mobile charging on one side and a practical cup holder on the opposite side. For safety, seat belts are provided in every row, ensuring that all passengers can travel securely. Overall, the Peugeot 5008 delivers the expected level of comfort and convenience, making it a good choice for those seeking a refined seven-seater experience.

Driving Experience

The vehicle offers excellent visibility from both the side and front, although rear visibility is limited. It has smooth brakes and an advanced steer-by-wire system. So the driver can’t get traditional feedback although the steering is effortless. The throttle shift is somewhat imperfect, resulting in smooth acceleration. As the Peugeot 5008 is a luxury SUV, it gives a reduced sense of road connection. The steering radius is typical of a 7-seater SUV. However, switching to sports mode enhances the driving experience, making it more enjoyable.
