Reviewed May 202424 min watchMercedes-Benz EQS450

Overview

Mercedes-Benz, a renowned German luxury automobile manufacturer has a rich heritage of innovation and craftsmanship. The Mercedes-Benz EQS, a flagship electric luxury SUV, exemplifies the company's commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge technology, offering an amazing driving experience with advanced electric performance and state-of-the-art features. Before the company introduced the Mercedes-Benz EQS luxury SUV, they brought the sedan version of that to the market. After that, the BMW Company merged with the Rolls Royce and introduced the BMW i7 luxury sedan. Always luxury SUVs are ahead of luxury sedans. Today, we delve into the only Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 SUV in Sri Lanka encapsulating European styling and comfort. The model is the 2024 business class edition with the special Alpine Gray exterior.

Exterior Design

Taking a look at the front, the electric SUV language is merged with the Mercedes-Benz language in the external figure. Instead of the typical massive Benz grill, there is a panel and the grill marks are replaced with small Mercedes-Benz logos. It is not only to add a look to the exterior but also to hide the sensors, climate control systems, and everything inside it. There are panels that look similar to vents to state the old classic language. The front has the typical Benz look with a small facelift. But the drag coefficient is not small. Therefore considering the practicality and the usability, there is no added advantage of making the design small. Although the other electric vehicles have a frunk space, the bonnet of the EQS can't be opened.

Coming to the side profile, there is a simple and clean look rather than an expensive SUV look. The door handles are attractive. Although the doors are not soft closing, they are heavy and sound nice. They have increased the clean minimalistic look at the rear exterior. There is the tail light of the Benz EQE with a more clean and tight look. The accents of the vehicle are limited. There is a badge to indicate EQS 450.

There is a button on the rear logo to open the boot area. So there is no need to find it difficult. When the vehicle is in the 7-seater setup, there is a space of 250 liters with a place to keep the charging set. The cables can be put inside the under-cabin space. But it is not spacious enough to put the charging kit. One can bend the 7-seat setup and double the space and if it is not enough the second-row seats can be bent electronically and have an area close to 2000 liters. The seats can be controlled separately or individually. There are other useful things like tethering points. Although the space is not sufficient for a super off-road camping setup, it is perfect for a road trip or a basic camping trip. One can have a nap on the floor even. And the boot is ideal for a basic family SUV. There is a flexible parcel shelf without hard plastic but it can be packed compactly. There is an emergency button to close the boot area.

Battery and Performance

The number, 450 in the name is close to the horsepower range of the vehicle. The Benz EQS 450 is 4-matic which means that there are two separate motors for the front and the rear to control all four wheels. Together the two motors generate 355 horsepower and a maximum torque of 800 Nm. One can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds, with a thrilling top speed of 209 km/h, when the numbers are matched. Talking about the charging and battery capacity, it has a 108.4 kWh battery pack and it gives a maximum range of 459 kilometers when fully charged. There are both slow-speed AC and fast-charging DC ports. Using the normal AC port, one can have the battery fully charged overnight or within 12 hours, and using the 200 kWh fast charger, one can achieve a full charge within 30 minutes.

Interior Design and Experience

The layout of the interior design is amazing with the Beige Nappa Leather. There is a traditional wooden door handle with a custom design. The sound system with an elegant grill can be found on the door. The huge continuous display has been divided into 3 separate parts. An attractive mood light setup can be seen. The ambient lights are more colorful in the dark. The colors and the setup of them can be changed according to the preference. They have been designed such that the light is bleed out in each panel. There is a beautiful soft leather heated steering wheel with all necessary controls in a minimalistic way. The part that is similar to the pedal shifters and displays plus/minus can be used to increase or decrease the region brake. The gear leaver is not on the center console but at the driving hand, giving the best practicality option. Talking about the air vent system, there is a huge integral beam on the dashboard and the directional beam is separate with an airplane fin design. There is a decorated DRL on that.

There is a digital meter cluster that indicates every piece of information including whether the rear passengers are wearing seat belts, the cruise control is switched on, or the lane assist is working. There is a 3D world map on the infotainment system. After setting up the map correctly, anything about the location can be searched through that. As they have not scanned it in Sri Lanka, it is not integrated yet. The vehicle gives the typical 2D map experience if the My Benz system is aligned. The climate control system is embedded in that. As the system is separated from others, it is easy to handle the climate control system with sound feedback. In the home system, there is the driving mode, radio, media, and off-road mode. There are so many settings in each feature. The highly defined 360-view parking package can be controlled by the center control system. The battery percentage, the range, and the mode of the vehicle can be checked by going to the EQ mode. When the car icon is pressed, there is the head-up display and the daily driving controls. A fingerprint setup is present to log into the vehicle account. It automatically controls the settings of the vehicle. If the display of the vehicle is distracting, it can be switched off with the power button. There is a mute button to stop the sound. The driving options of the vehicle, namely; off-road, eco, comfort, sport, and individual can be found in the dynamic option. The individual mode permits setting up the motor output of the battery, the suspension setup, and the assist control system individually according to the driver’s comfort. There is a volume button instead of a volume meter. There are so many other options including, a premium plus package, air balance package, driving assistance package plus, and Burmester 3D surround sound system with a 10-year demo warranty as the best luxury SUV in the world.
There is a massive space with two fast charging ports inside the storage area under the armrest. There is a place to rest the key. Two rotational cup holders are present with a wireless charging system. Everything is heavy and weighted and operates smoothly. There is a mirror with a light on the top. But the light doesn’t focus on the face directly. Close to that, there is a place to control the front and rear interior lights. The air vents which give a considerable air flow can be seen at the side as well as at the middle. Instead of a button, there is a door handle. There are so many lights that add elegance to the interior. The rear two passengers can find an underarm wireless charger and a portable center control system when there is no third passenger.
